Let’s go to Iceland.
Join me for a 4-day solo road trip along Iceland’s iconic Southern Coast. We’ll explore Reykjavík, The Golden Circle, Snæfellsnes, Reynisfjara, Jökulsárlón, and all the waterfalls, glaciers, and kleinur in between.
My worries seem so very small with my waterfall.
I was first inspired to visit this beautiful country after hearing Jimi Hendrix’s May This Be Love for the first time. I began to develop a vision of a land far away, with misty waterfalls cascading down a mountain, ocean waves crashing into rocky, moss-covered cliffs. My heart longed to visit a place where the natural wonders of the world could be quietly observed and admired, and I could feel my small, mindful position on the planet.
And so, I began to research Iceland, and envisioned roadtripping around, taking in the magical world around me in reflective solitude and connection.
I hope my experience inspires you to create your own adventure to this special country.
Day One. Reykjavík
& The Golden Circle.
After landing in Keflavík International Airport, I scooped up my car rental and set off on my adventure.
Just 45 minutes from the airport, Reykjavìk is a great jumping off to begin an Icelandic adventure. The country’s capital city is bustling with culture, history, shopping, and amazing food options.
I began my journey the way I love starting all my adventures — at a local coffee shop. I popped into in Kaffibrennslan in downtown Reykjavìk, a small cafe that attracts locals and tourists. I enjoyed a delicious chai latte and a waffle with chocolate and cream, and quietly melted in the cozy atmosphere.
If you’re looking for a meal, I highly recommend stopping by Íslenski Barinn for some delicious fish n chips, plus local beers and ciders.
For an Icelandic bakery, Baka Baka or Brauð & Co are lovely spots to check out.
After exploring Reykjavìk, I then ventured off on a roadtrip to the Golden Circle, a popular scenic driving route in the Thingvellir National Park, about an hour outside of the capital.
I first stopped at Öxarárfoss, a popular waterfall with wonderful viewing spots, and then continued on to Hrafnagjá, an observation deck with incredible views of volcanic rocks.
I then started my first on-foot adventure of my trip, setting out to get up-close and personal with some waterfalls — Hlauptungufoss, Miðfoss, Brúarfoss — on a 4-mile hike from AllTrails.
Other popular spots in the Golden Circle that I didn’t make it to were the Geysir Hot Springs, an incredible geothermic area, and the Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls.
You could easily spend an entire day exploring all the natural wonders and hidden gems of the Golden Circle.
Day Two. Kvernufoss, Fjaðrárgljúfur, & Jökulsárlón.
My second day was jam-packed with lots of driving, waterfalls, moss-covered cliffs, glaciers, and a black sand beach.
I started with what turned out to be my personal favorite waterfall in Iceland, Kvernufoss. It’s somewhat of a hidden gem, located at the end of a short, moss-covered trail. It’s right around the corner from Skogafoss, Iceland’s most famous waterfall, and attracts fewer crowds.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
